Dystocia

This means difficulty giving birth. It is a big subject and long chapters are written in Gynaecology text books regarding dystocia. We simply wish to flag up a few points which may be of help.

If a mother is straining more than two hours on a first pup or kitten or one hour without progress on a second or subsequent baby then there may well be trouble and we would want to check.

If a portion of puppy or kitten is visible but mum cannot finally deliver, then prompt intervention may be life saving. A quick phone call to the Veterinarian will result in advice on the best action to take so please feel free to call.

Often all that is needed is an injection to get contractions started or make then stronger, In any case the earlier we discover any trouble the better will be the outcome.

If a caesarian were to be needed we are all of us well practiced at the procedure.

Our veterinarians are all experienced general practitioners with a broad knowledge and
understanding of animal health, illness and injury.
